Virtual Console functionality for Wii U has been revealed.

The ability to download and play classic Nintendo games will be available shortly after a system update this spring.

NES and Super NES titles will be available at launch, followed by Game Boy Advance titles in the near future.

Pricing for Virtual Console games will be the same as on the Wii, with NES titles available for £3.49 and £5.49 for SNES games.

Discounts will be available for games already purchased on Wii, with NES games lowered to 99p and SNES titles £1.49.

Also revealed is a promotion to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Famicom in Japan, where each month until July one NES or SNES game will be available for just 30p.

The first title, Balloon Fight, is available to download at the discounted price from today.

Future titles coming in the promotion include Mario & Yoshi, Kirby's Adventure Land and Super Metroid.

Virtual Console games for Wii U are being developed specially for the platform, and will offer GamePad-only play as well as Miiverse support.

The scheme was announced in a special Wii U-focused Nintendo Direct conference earlier today (January 23).

Nintendo also announced two new Legend of Zelda games, including a HD remake of GameCube adventure Wind Waker.

It also confirmed that a new Mario Kart and 3D Super Mario game would be playable at the E3 gaming expo in June.
