After two sold-out performances earlier this year, Nancy Hays ( as Judy Garland ) and Michelle Lauto ( as Liza Minnelli ) are bringing 'Judy & Liza—Once in a Lifetime' back to the Uptown Underground Sunday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., in an expanded version with even more songs.

This cabaret show is a re-creation of the famed concert presented by the legendary mother-daughter duo of Judy Garland and an 18-year-old Liza Minnelli in 1964 at the London Palladium. This tribute features the classic songs, costumes, dialogue and dance steps to help the audience re-live the historic occasion, with solos like 'The Man That Got Away', 'Just in Time' and 'Gypsy in My Soul' and duets like 'Chicago' and 'Get Happy/Happy Days', backed by a jazz combo with orchestral arrangements by Robert Ollis ( music director and pianist ).

Nancy recently wowed critics and audiences of Light Opera Works as the title star of Mame, and Michelle is just opening as a principal in Porchlight Music Theatre's In the Heights. Nancy and Michelle conceived this tribute while portraying Judy and Liza to much acclaim in last year's production by Pride Films & Plays of The Boy From Oz. This show celebrates the thrilling mother-daughter collaboration for that special concert, including their affectionate banter, as directed and choreographed by Jeff nominee Cam Turner, with costumes designed by Jeff-award-winner John Nasca.

This revised edition of the 1965 Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli concert recording Live at the London Palladium (taken from shows performed in November 1964) was a long time in coming, first announced by its original label, Capitol, for a CD appearance in 2002 and then by Collectors' Choice Music in 2009, though both releases were canceled. That was frustrating for Garland and Minnelli fans, who should be pleased that at last DRG has succeeded in putting out a version with refurbished sound and two new tracks (Garland's 'Once in a Lifetime' and 'Just in Time'), while moving 'The Man That Got Away,' originally sequenced right after the overture, back to the place it was actually performed in the show, much later. Welcome as the belated release may be, however, neither singer is heard at her best here. At 42, Garland was entering the last phase of her difficult life, and while she rouses herself now and then, her singing can be mannered and out-of-breath, her diction sometimes slurred. If she is noticeably past her peak, however, her 18-year-old daughter is nowhere near hers. Minnelli had recently released her debut LP, Liza! Liza!, when she appeared with her mother, but, though clearly talented, was far from a mature performer, tending to get a little out of control in her excitement (and, perhaps, nervousness). Still, the best moments of the concert are the ones when the two sing together; the mother tends to calm the daughter down, while the daughter inspires the mother to more spirited takes on her old warhorses. This album is no Judy at Carnegie Hall (reportedly, Capitol held it back from release for a while in the hopes of getting Garland to redo more of her vocals in a recording studio after she did do some overdubs), but the mother-daughter chemistry is its strong suit. ~ William Ruhlmann
